What Is A-Book and B-Book Routing in Forex?

A brokerage can have strong acquisition, competitive spreads, and a polished trading terminal, then lose margin through one weak operational decision: routing every client order the same way. When a founder asks what A-Book and B-Book routing is, the practical answer is simple. It is the logic that determines whether a broker transfers market exposure to external liquidity or retains that exposure internally.

That decision affects more than P&L. It influences liquidity costs, slippage exposure, capital requirements, client execution quality, compliance controls, and the dealing desk’s ability to respond when market conditions change. For Forex and CFD brokers, routing is not a static configuration. It is a core part of risk infrastructure.

What Is A-Book and B-Book Routing?

A-Book and B-Book routing are two principal methods a brokerage uses to handle client trades.

With A-Book routing, the broker passes a client order to an external liquidity provider, prime broker, or liquidity venue. The broker earns through spread markup, commission, financing, or a combination of these. Because the trade is offset externally, the broker is not generally taking the client’s directional market risk.

With B-Book routing, the broker internalizes the client trade instead of immediately hedging it with an external counterparty. The client still receives an execution from the broker, but the broker retains the resulting exposure. If the client loses, that loss can become brokerage revenue. If the client profits, the broker carries the liability unless it chooses to hedge some or all of the position later.

Neither model is inherently good or bad. The correct approach depends on client behavior, flow quality, market volatility, liquidity cost, the broker’s risk appetite, and the quality of its real-time controls.

How A-Book Routing Works

In an A-Book model, a client sends an order through the trading platform. The broker’s bridge or execution engine validates the order and routes it to one or more liquidity sources. The external counterparty fills the trade, and the broker receives a corresponding hedge.

The principal benefit is risk transfer. A broker that A-Books a trade avoids carrying open directional exposure from that position. This can be appropriate for larger accounts, professional traders, high-volume strategies, news traders, or flow that has a consistent record of profitability.

A-Book execution also creates a clearer economic structure. The broker monetizes the service of providing access, technology, pricing, and execution rather than relying on the client’s trading outcome. For regulated businesses or firms building an institutional client base, this distinction can matter commercially as well as operationally.

The trade-off is cost. External liquidity has spreads, commissions, minimums, reject risk, and market impact. During fast markets, the broker may face partial fills, price changes, widened spreads, or delayed hedging. Routing every trade externally can protect against client profitability while reducing gross margin on flow that could otherwise be efficiently internalized.

How B-Book Routing Works

B-Book routing keeps the trade inside the brokerage’s risk book. The broker becomes the effective counterparty and decides whether to hold the exposure, net it against opposite client positions, or hedge it later.

For many retail CFD businesses, this is a commercially significant model. Retail order flow is often diversified, relatively small in ticket size, and naturally offset across a large client base. If one group of clients is net long EUR/USD while another is net short, the broker may have limited residual exposure after internal netting. No external hedge is required for the matched portion.

Internalization can improve economics by reducing liquidity commissions and avoiding unnecessary external fills. It can also improve execution consistency for smaller tickets when the broker has sufficient internal depth and sound pricing controls.

But B-Book routing requires discipline. A broker that retains exposure without understanding its client mix can accumulate risk quickly. A single profitable segment, correlated positions across accounts, or a major macro event can turn an apparently balanced book into a material loss. The issue is not whether the broker B-Books. The issue is whether it can measure exposure accurately and act before exposure becomes unmanageable.

Why Static B-Book Rules Create Risk

Many brokerages begin with basic routing rules: route certain account types to A-Book, retain others in B-Book, and review results at the end of the day. This may work at low volume, but it does not scale well across multiple instruments, jurisdictions, account groups, and client profiles.

Static rules fail because client behavior changes. A trader who was consistently unprofitable may alter strategy, increase deposits, begin trading around high-impact news, or move to an automated system. A client tagged for B-Book six months ago may now create concentrated, high-risk exposure.

The same applies to market conditions. A routing setup that performs well in normal liquidity may become inefficient during major central bank announcements, geopolitical shocks, or thin-session trading. Spreads widen, hedge costs rise, and correlated client positions can move in the same direction within seconds.

This is why execution logic must be dynamic. A broker needs to assess not only who is trading, but what they are trading, when they are trading, how the order interacts with current inventory, and whether an external hedge is available at an acceptable price.

Hybrid Routing Is Usually the Operational Reality

Most scaled Forex and CFD brokers operate a hybrid model rather than choosing A-Book or B-Book exclusively. They internalize flow that fits their risk parameters and route selected orders externally. They may also hedge only the net exposure rather than every individual client trade.

For example, a broker may retain small, diversified flow in EUR/USD but A-Book large tickets, profitable accounts, latency-sensitive strategies, or positions held through major event risk. It may also use split routing, where a defined percentage of an order is internalized and the rest is routed to external liquidity.

The objective is not to classify clients permanently as “good” or “bad” flow. That mindset is too simplistic and can create poor execution decisions. The objective is to manage the brokerage’s aggregate exposure while maintaining fair, defensible execution for clients.

A mature hybrid model typically evaluates several variables together:

  • Client profitability, holding time, trade frequency, and strategy signals
  • Instrument volatility, liquidity depth, spread conditions, and event risk
  • Net exposure by symbol, currency, client group, and book
  • Order size, execution urgency, and available hedge capacity
  • Current liquidity provider quality, fill rates, and rejection behavior

These inputs should inform routing in real time, not through manual dealing desk intervention after the exposure has already changed.

Routing quality depends on the execution layer between the trading terminal, CRM, risk controls, and liquidity venues. If these systems are disconnected, the broker operates with delayed data and manual workarounds. A dealer may see exposure in one system, client history in another, and liquidity performance somewhere else.

For brokers operating across several entities or jurisdictions, consistency becomes even more important. Different client classifications, leverage limits, product permissions, and disclosure requirements may affect what routing policy is appropriate. One global rule set is rarely enough.

The strongest brokerage model is not the one that sends everything to liquidity or keeps everything in-house. It is the one that can make the right routing decision at the order level, explain why it made that decision, and change course before risk becomes a balance-sheet problem.
